Nkwali, Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Many places claim to be "among the remaining wilderness areas" or "one of the last wildlife sanctuaries"; South Luangwa National Park lives up to both and more. The Luangwa Valley is vast, remote and home to both people and a truly impressive variety of game.

The South Luangwa Park is 9050 sq. kilometer; with the river, its tributaries and the riverine strips being the focus of the wildlife viewing. There are diverse habitats, from huge ox bow lagoons of varying stages of maturity, woodlands, ebony groves, grassland and thickets, that host a great variety of wildlife. The birdlife is also excellent with over 450 species to be seen.

Nkwali is located on the banks of the Luangwa on a magnificent meander in the river overlooking the National Park where leopards roam along the bank and can often be spotted from camp. Situated on Robin Pope Safaris’ private land outside the park there is a private game viewing area behind camp as well as exclusive

Game Drives

An option of day or night drives. Toyota Landcruisers with two tier seats (three tier for groups / families) are used - a "window" seat (i.e. two people per row) for everyone. Open top vehicles, affording you total 360 degree vision.

Walking Safaris

The walks are led by the knowledgeable guides, and escorted by an armed National Park scout. The guiding team is very passionate and will certainly impart some amazing bush insights at a level that will surprise you.

Seasonal Boating

A special treat indeed for guests in the Emerald Season. From end December/January to around April. Explore the lagoons for enhanced game viewing and birding.

Village Tours

A visit to Kawaza Village and the schools is often remembered years later by our guests as the most rewarding part of their visit to Africa. This gives a more holistic experience of the Luangwa Valley. Alternatively take a stroll within the community around the Mfuwe area which is bustling – small “dukas” (shops), the market, bars, and people offering various skills.

Wildlife Education Centre

A charitable trust for the school children of the Luangwa Valley to teach them about wildlife and conservation. Great activity for the children especially.

Tribal Textiles

For unique locally produced hand-painted textiles, drawing inspiration from the stunning Zambian wildlife and surroundings. A perfect place to buy a souvenir or two of your Zambian experience...

Nkwali is a small intimate and authentic camp and is the ideal start off point to any safari with a few more creature comforts than the bush camps to help ease people into the African way of life.

With a guest to guide ratio of 4:1 each guest is offered increased flexibility and choice on activities and therefore a far more personalised experience.

Even though the camp is situated outside the National Park this does not impact on the game viewing with private land offering large diversity of wildlife behind the camp for short game drives and exclusive access directly into the park by boat or by using the pontoon for most of the activities. We do occasionally use the main gate for guests staying with us for extended periods of time as well as for game drive transfers up to the bush camps.

The attention to detail and service provided by the team at Nkwali is exceptional and makes this a truly superb camp and one which guests continue to return to.
