Kuro Tarangire, Tarangire, Tanzania

Kuro Tarangire is set amid a grove of Acacia and Kigelia trees on the banks of the Tarangire River - often a dry, sandy course snaking through this quiet area of the park. The area sees the rhythmic movement of wildlife as it traverses the park from the hills in the west to the swamps on the eastern side, and between the north and the south along the river line.

Conscious of wanting to experience this place in a way that harmonises with the natural tempo, without overpowering it, the camp was created with a light footprint. At the culmination of each season the camp and staff will move on like the Nomads they are, leaving only the trees and birds and animals, as if they were never there.

Six large, light safari tents with verandahs and en-suite bucket showers and flush eco-toilets. One of these is a family tent which has two en-suite bedrooms and an adjoining sitting area. Solar lighting, hot water provided on demand. Open-sided, airy, grass thatched lounge and dining room furnished with hides, canvas and a touch of colourful textiles.

Tarangire is an old haunt and in fact head guide Richard Knocker cut his teeth here on this very site, and it was also Mark & Milly Houldsworth’s first marital home. So the owners kind of got a soft spot for it and when they decided to open their camp there, as a perfect complement to the other camps in the north, choosing a site was easy.

What the owners particularly like about this spot is that it gives guests access to the Silale Swamp area which attracts lots of eles, and it's located on the Tarangire River which is a bit of a corridor for wildlife moving through the park. On trips there, you'll often seen huge herds of buffalo moving between the hills to the west and the riverbed.

The birdlife here is pretty impressive too, with 550 species having been recorded, and the largest number of breeding species of anywhere in the world.
