Kwandwe Private Game Reserve lies approximately 65 km from the coast and 45 km inland from Grahamstown, a pristine safari destination in 22,000 hectares of private wilderness – making it the largest private Big Five game viewing area in South Africa. With 3 exclusive-use villas and 2 intimate lodges, Kwandwe guests enjoy a variety of safari activities tailored for couples, families, and groups of friends.
Five isolated lodges are contained within the reserve:
Located on a steep bank with fantastic views over the Great Fish River, which is frequented by grazing game. Each suite has fold away glass doors that open-up to the expansive landscapes of the Eastern Cape.
Ecca Lodge guests enjoy views over an acacia, aloe and spekboom-studded valley. Ecca Lodge has 3 double suites for couples and 3 family suites that come with a private safari vehicle, guide & tracker as from 2017; perfectly suited for families of 4 with 2 children under 16
Melton Manor is a 4-bedroom, contemporary frontier farmhouse designed with many communal living spaces as well as private corners to retreat into. The Manor is designed around a central courtyard with a large swimming pool where families and friends can play, relax and enjoy meals. It is available for parties of up to 8 people, and comes with a private safari vehicle, a tracker, a ranger, chef and a butler.
Kwandwe Fort House is a modern, sole-use safari villa in a private setting with sweeping views over the expansive reserve. The villa features a private wine cellar, spa treatment room, guest pantry, and expansive lawns with a boma for outdoor dining. It has 2 master bedrooms and 2 twin bedrooms (all en-suite) which accommodate 4 adults, 4 children and a toddler 2 years or younger in a cot. The Fort House is perfect for 2 families travelling together, it is fully staffed, serviced daily, and comes with a private chef, butler, ranger, tracker and safari vehicle.
Uplands Homestead is an elegant farmhouse built in 1905 and beautifully restored to retain its old-time charm. Located in a tranquil valley and offered for the sole use of families and small parties of up to 6 people. Guests enjoy ultimate privacy, and are carefully catered to by a private chef, dedicated butler and a team of friendly staff, the ideal setting for families with young children.
Guests can try their hand at catching and releasing catfish and babel in one of the dams.
A sophisticated and romantic lodge with large open fires and expansive views. Each suite has a private plunge pool in every suite, outdoor and indoor shower as well as beautiful roll top bath
Guests can enjoy a luxurious massage in the privacy of their own suite or on their private deck.
Big game walking safari with an armed ranger who will guide guests through ‘up close and personal’ sightings.
In a ground-breaking move, Kwandwe initiated its own social development arm in 2002, unique to the reserve and the surrounding rural communities. The Ubunye Foundation, is the soul of Kwandwe. Energy and resources are focused on those living in poverty stricken rural areas where access to basic goods and services, in particular education and healthcare, is severely limited.
