Xigera Camp, Okavango Delta, Botswana

Xigera Camp (pronounced Keejera) lies on the aptly named Paradise Island, surrounded by deep channels and lush vegetation within a remote area of the productive Moremi Game Reserve. For much of the year this magnificent area epitomises the permanently flooded section of the Okavango Delta, with palm-filled islands, riverine forests, a multitude of clear water channels and expansive floodplains.

There are nine raised luxury tents with en-suite facilities, an outdoor shower – and superb views of the classic Okavango Delta floodplains that surround the camp. Meals and evening drinks are enjoyed in the lounge, bar and dining area overlooking a permanently flowing channel or under the stars in a traditional African boma. For those hot days there is a small plunge pool in which to cool off.

Highlights

  • This true wetland paradise is a delight for birdwatchers and lovers of tranquil beauty
  • The best place in the Delta to see the elusive sitatunga antelope
  • Learn about the fascinating formation of the incredible Okavango Delta

Whilst the emphasis at Xigera is on water activities, making this the perfect ‘water camp,’ game drives are offered all year round.

Game Drives

Game drives explore further afield, where wildlife like lion, leopard and hyaena, buffalo and elephant can be seen. Our open Land Rovers each accommodate a maximum of seven guests allowing each guest a ‘window’ outside seat. Please note that there are no night drives at Xigera.

Mokoro Excursions*

There is no better way of viewing game and capturing the essence of the Okavango than by traditional mokoro (dugout canoe). The Okavango-born guide and poler will reveal the wiles and secrets of living in the Delta while you spot tiny frogs and colourful waterbirds. *This activity is water-level dependent.

Mokoro Excursions

Glide silently through pristine waterways of the Okavango Delta in a mokoro (traditional-style dugout canoe) to gain a unique perspective on the diversity of life both big and small in this fascinating ecosystem.

Boating*

Water-level dependent, boating is another idyllic form of viewing water-based wildlife. Hippo and crocodile are often seen on these adventures, and sometimes even the elusive sitatunga. *This activity is water-level dependent.

Fishing

Fishing with a limited supply of basic equipment is on offer seasonally on a catch-and-release basis. Please note that fishing takes place in waters outside of the Moremi since fishing is not allowed within the Game Reserve.

Birding

Xigera Camp is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Aside from the famous Pel’s fishing-owl, waterbirds large and small, colourful and secretive are seen here, such as African skimmer, slaty egret, wattled crane and much more.

The Xigera Camp area is known for its large elephant population. In addition, unlike the permanently inundated areas of the Okavango Delta, the habitats around Xigera Camp vary greatly, allowing for an abundance of general game viewing, including giraffe, zebra, antelope such as impala, tsessebe, lechwe and wildebeest, and buffalo and warthog. Leopard are common, and hyaena and African wild dog are also regularly seen, while a number of lion have moved into the area, and can sometimes be heard roaring at night.
